Victor,
ReplyDeleteI think school discipline is a big issue for many schools. I think school discipline warrants a research study plan.
I believe that school discipline is a big issue in many schools as well. I believe that research into a school's discipline plan can highlight many things. For instance, is the discipline plan being delivered in a consistent manner? Is the plan both fair and effective? Is the plan fair but flexible enough to consider each incident on an individual basis? Are the teachers happy with the plan? Do they feel supported and valued? Are the parents happy? Do they feel that their student is safe and treated fairly? Victor, I think that you will find that there is sometimes a connection between a personal issue and a negative behavior. I am just wondering what, after your research estabishes that this is the case, is the plan? Will the student be recommended for counseling in lieu of being punished? Will conflict resolution be implemented in incidents where personal issues have taken the form of bullying? If the issue has been determined to be connected to a personal issue, is the discipline different? I guess that my main question is, once the behavior is linked to a personal issue, then what?
ReplyDeleteVictor, PLEASE respond to my research template as well.
ReplyDeleteVictor, I think a little bit more detail in your plan would be beneficial. You write that your goal is to research connection between personal issues and negative behaviors. What exactly does "personal issues" mean? I think the "goal" of the research should be more clear. Do you mean you're researching "Why" kids misbehave? I think the goal determines the rest of the plan and a more clear goal would be beneficial.
Action Research Update:
ReplyDeleteI have worked with my principal as we have reviewed the Campus Discipline Management Plan. We have evaluated how the different incidents are broken down into different categories. The consequences are developed to be progressive depending on the number of inferences and the severity of the incident. Even though we have a plan in place, many of the discipline referrals require some investigations and conversations to happen between the people involved plus any witnesses who can provide additional information. All of the situations are different and sometimes the principal must make a judgement call to determine what the consequences will be using the Discipline Plan as a guide to help.
I have also reviewed the discipline referrals for three particular students on my campus and reviewed the different situations with each one. Each child has different situations and home environments that are not very supportive to the education environment. I want to determine if there is a correlation between home environment and behaviors at school. I will continue to monitor the behavior of these three students along with their behavior at school to try and find whether there is some type of correlation or not. I find it very interesting to review the connections between the parental support and student behavior at school. Many times we see that students who have strong parental involvement in their education and school activities have better success with academics and social skills too. Unfortunately, the students who sometimes lack in parental support at home tend to have difficulties with social skills and academic skills too.
I will continue to work with the principal as we work with the discipline plan to help determine if we need to possible review the plan andmake some changes. We will have to work with the site based decision making team to come up with any recommendations for changes so we can present to the superintendent and school board.
